Bubbly SHAWL

INSPIRATION
This shawl was originally published in Making Magazine's Issue #10 / Intricate. The inspiration for this reversible shawl came from the concept of “intricate,” which I interpreted as fascinating, eye-catching, intriguing, and playful. 

The shawl features a stitch pattern that creates a lot of texture and negative space and makes the knitting experience engaging and fun. At the same time, the pattern is easy to remember and execute.

CONSTRUCTION
This triangular shawl is worked sideways, starting from the right tip and ending with the left tip. While it is not essential to do a gauge swatch before casting on, I recommend steam-blocking the first 6”/15 cm of your knitting to ensure you like the fabric’s feel. It should be fairly loose and flowy.

SIZES: 1 (2, 3)

YARN: fingering, DK (you can work with any yarn thickness)

DK weight version:

Meadow by Ocean by the Sea (100% organic merino; 105 g / 246 yd / 225 m)

– 3 (4, 6) skeins in Mellow (cream/light yellow)

OR

620 (970, 1400) yd 566 (886, 1278) m in DK weight yarn

Fingering weight version:

Soka’pii by The Farmers Daughter (100% Rambouillet; 50 g / 248 yd / 227 m)

– 3 (5, 7) skeins in Shake A Day (deep yellow/ochre)

OR

745 (1160, 1670) yd / 679 (1061, 1528) m in fingering weight yarn

GAUGE:
24 stitches and 32 rows = 4"/10 cm in Stockinette, after blocking

NEEDLES: 32”/80 cm circular needle in the size necessary to obtain gauge

Recommended needle sizes:
Fingering: US 2 / 3.00 mm

DK: US 3 / 3.25 mm

NOTIONS: tapestry needle
